Administrative procedures




1. WORK

For researchers living in the EU:

1) Application for approval of the university degree, postgraduate course, master or Phd. Approval of a title means that it is valid and recognized in the Spanish territory. Must be requested at the Ministry of Education (or the corresponding body) in the country of origin. www.eracareers.es/fecyt/guia/guia_cap07

2) Civil registration. By law, every person living in Spain is obliged to register in the municipality where he/she resides. The municipal register is the administrative record showing all the neighbours who live or ordinarily resident in that municipality. To get this, you must contact the City Hall where you reside.

Documents needed for the registration:

- Individual or Collective Registration Form (to request at the Town Hall).

- Original and photocopy of the passport.

- Photocopy and original of the lease or authorization signed by the owner of the house where he/she is hosted.

- In case of children, original and photocopy of passports and family book

3) Foreign Identification Number (NIE). It is a personal number, unique and exclusive. It is the identification number that shall be granted when it is authorized to remain in Spain and will appear on all documents you are assigned. To get this, you must ask it in person at the police station nearest the applicant's address.

Documentation to be submitted when applying for the NIE:

- Form-official request, which will be processed in the same police station.

- Identity card or original passport and photocopy.

- Photo of the applicant, white background colour, passport size.

- Proof of the reasons of the request

4) Sign up for Social Security. Contact the office of the General Treasury of Social Security closer to the applicant's residence.

5) Medical Certificate. Buy the form to that effect at official tobacco shops (known in Spanish as ‘Estanco'). It has an approximate price of 30 €. Then, go to any primary care center to have a small medical checkup.

Applicant coming from out of the EU:

1) Visa. To apply for work visa, should contact the General Consulate of Spain in your country. There are different types of visas and various procedures to obtain them. You can get specific information on: www.migrar.org/fotos/archivos/2632007154124.pdf

To achieve it, you must appear in person at the Foreign Office

(in Spanish is called Oficina de Extranjería) .

2. STUDY / SCOLARSHIP

Foreigners wishing to do research works or non-remunerated training, or study or extend studies, in any Spanish school or research center, public or private, officially recognized, must have the corresponding student visa.

Applications for student visa must be applied in person, on the official form, at the diplomatic mission or Spanish consular office abroad in the country of origin of the applicant. 

The student visa application has to be accompanied by documents proving:

a) The validity of the passport or travel document of the applicant for the entire period for which the visa is requested.

b) The admission to a school, public or private, officially recognized, to extend or broaden studies or undertake research or training, which must include, where appropriate, the code number assigned to the Registro nacional de universidades, centros y enseñanzas (National Register of Universities, Centers and Teaching), or in the Registro estatal de centros docentes no universitarios (State Register of non-university schools'), both belonging to the Ministry of Education, as well as research centers recognized as such by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade or the Ministry of Education.

c) The content of the studies, training or research to be done.

d) A health insurance covering for the entire length of stay in Spain, medical expenses and repatriation in case of accident or sudden illness.

e) The provision of subsistence evidences and accommodation for the period requested and, where appropriate, to ensure a return to the country of origin.

- When the length of study or research is longer than six months, will require also:

f) A medical certificate to certify that he/she doesn't suffer from any of the diseases subject to quarantine under the International Health Regulations.
