PLASMONIC METAMATERIALS FOR BIOSENSING

Friday, March 25, Prof. Anatoly V. Zayats from the King's College London, UK.

Plasmonic biosensors rely on surface plasmon resonance or localized surface plasmons on continuous or nanostructured noble metal surfaces to detect molecular binding events. Confined to a metal/dielectric interface, surface plasmons are known to be extremely sensitive to the refractive index of the dielectric medium within the penetration depth of the evanescent field. Recently, a dramatic improvement in biosensing has been demonstrated employing plasmonic metamaterials which consist of strongly interacting metal nanopraticles. The interaction between the plasmonic resonances of nanoparticles results in conceptually new electromagnetic modes associated with the nanoparticle ensemble that provides much higher sensitivities and/or simplified sensing configurations. In this talk we will overview several approaches to design plasmonic metamaterials tailored for sensing applications and describe their biosensing applications. Combined with tuneable spectral response and a unique nanoporous bio-immobilization template, the metamaterial-based biosensor drastically outperforms its homogeneous or nanoplasmonics-based counterparts.
