NANOPHOTONIC AND PLASMONIC SENSORS

Friday, April 1, Dr. Jaime Gomez-Rivas from the FOM institute AMOLF, Philips Research and Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands.

Confining electromagnetic radiation on length scales much smaller than the wavelength is one of the major challenges of current research in photonics. This confinement can lead to optical sensors with enhanced sensitivity and improved figures of merit. In this presentation, I will discuss novel approaches to confine and guide radiation by means of surface modes supported by strongly absorbing nanometric layers and periodic arrays of optical nanoantennas. In both cases, surface polaritons are responsible for strong near field enhancements and for a large sensitivity to changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium.
