CIBER

What is CIBER?

CIBER means "Centro de Investigación Biomédica En Red". It's a research institution, legally independent, whose mission is to make research on a specific pathology, health problem, diagnostics and therapies that are considered strategic; a multidisciplinary Networking Research Center that integrate basic, clinical and technological research in a common translational research program.

CIBER initiative is one of the main actions devised in the Spanish Global Research Initiative "Ingenio 2010".

There are seven CIBERs Network Research Centers created by the Spanish Government in the field of Biomedicine and Health Sciences.

NanoBiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications has been selected to participate in the CIBER-BBN: CIBER on Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine.

CIBER-BBN

The CIBER on Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine research will be oriented to improve surgical interventions, prevention of diseases, systems for diagnostics and technologies for specific therapies such as regenerative medicine or nanotherapies.

The CIBER-BBN is clearly multidisciplinary, promoting the convergence of technologies like Informatics, Material Science, Nanotechnologies, Tissue Engineering, Cell Biology, Electronics, Instrumentation and Sensors, among many others.

Composition and areas of research

29 groups were selected by an international panel out of more than 100 presented in the original call:

  1. Univerity: 17 (59%)
  2. Other research centers: 7 (24%)
  3. Hospitals: 5 (17%)

Three main research areas:

  1. Nanomedicine: 13 (45%)
  2. Bioengineering and Biomedical Imaging: 9 (31%)
  3. Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering: 7 (24%)

Global Objectives

  • To promote synergies increasing the research capabilities and potential of the composing groups.
  • To strengthen a higher and better use of advanced technologies in the National Health System, promoting translational research.
  • To improve the technological level of the National industry in this sector.
  • To share resources and infrastructures between groups, promoting the coordination.
  • To favor the appearance of well-trained specialists in health technologies useful for the National Health System.
  • To become a recognized authority for hospitals and the National Health System in general to assess in new advanced biomedical technologies.
